Engineering Levels & Compensation
at RTS Labs
We built RTS Labs around a pretty simple truth: fancy titles don’t build great systems, great engineers do. We are a delivery-first team of software and data engineers focused entirely on shipping production-ready code and AI solutions instead of slick PowerPoint decks. Our culture thrives on low-ego, fast-moving collaboration to solve complex problems directly.

How We Determine Your Level and Compensation
To keep things completely transparent and perfectly aligned on pay equity, we decouple career growth from arbitrary corporate labels. There are no political hurdles, no waiting for someone to vacate a title, and zero glass ceilings. Whether you are just getting started in your career or you’ve been architecting complex platforms for decades, everyone here maps directly to a clear Level 1 through 10 framework. You own your trajectory, you know exactly what is expected of you, and you get rewarded purely for the impact you bring to the table.
Our Leveling Philosophy
At RTS Labs, technical skill alone does not determine your level. We evaluate engineering excellence through a mix of technical craft, velocity, handling of ambiguity, and the leverage you create for our clients and teammates.
-
No Artificial Caps
There are no "budget caps" or limits on how many people can reach our senior, staff, and principal levels. If you earn the level, you get the level and the compensation that goes with it.
-
Equitable Pay Across the Board
To maintain internal equity, everyone at the same level is paid equally according to our Richmond, VA market baseline. Your location or local cost of living will never be used to adjust your pay downward.
-
Continuous Growth
Growth conversations happen year-round, even though formal promotions and leveling decisions take place during the annual review process. At RTS Labs, leaders focus on regular feedback, autonomy, and development resources to help team members strengthen their skills, broaden their impact, and progress toward the next level.
The RTS Impact Framework
Levels 1 - 10
We assess and level engineers across ten distinct stages of scope, execution, and complexity. While we look at your holistic capability rather than just a calendar, the guidelines below reflect the typical experience profiles for each level.
1
0 to 2 years
Foundation & Guided Execution
You are building your foundational technical skill set. You take well-defined, isolated tasks and execute them cleanly. You focus on learning our core workflows, absorbing feedback rapidly, and mastering the fundamentals of clean code and data pipelines.
2
1 to 3 years
Autonomy & Independent Delivery
You take ownership of standard technical initiatives from concept to delivery with minimal daily oversight. You write reliable, maintainable code that meets our quality standards and shows strong forward momentum when learning new tech stacks.
3
2 to 5 years
Managing Complexity
You execute initiatives derived from high-level descriptions and shift fluidly when client environments get messy. You drive standard features or data workflows independently, ensuring your work integrates flawlessly with the broader architecture.
4
3 to 6 years
Pragmatic Design & Problem Solving
You consistently see a problem and move without waiting for a perfect ticket. You make smart day-to-day architectural decisions that strike a balance between speed-to-market and long-term technical debt, knowing exactly when to pull in teammates to bypass a bottleneck.
5
5 to 8 years
Navigating Ambiguity
You thrive when dropped into wide-open, ambiguous client environments. You don’t need every detail handed to you; you clarify what matters, establish progress, and architect scalable data and software ecosystems from the ground up.
6
6 to 10 years
Systems Architecture & Mentorship
You consistently generate product, process, and technical ideas, making excellent calls on when and how to execute them. Your technical contributions are invaluable to the client, and you naturally level up the mid-level and junior engineers around you.
7
8 to 12+ years
High Leverage & Risk Mitigation
You don’t just solve problems, you think ahead and spot risks months in advance so leadership can make better calls before problems get expensive. Your engineering work creates massive leverage, unblocking and accelerating multiple work streams simultaneously.
8
10 to 15+ years
Client Strategy & Technical Ownership
You serve as a trusted strategic partner to both our internal teams and our enterprise clients. You explain complex technical tradeoffs in plain, business-first language and navigate compressed timelines and shifting client requirements without drama.
9
12 to 15+ years
Visionary Engineering & Organizational Impact
You define engineering excellence at RTS Labs. You own technical outcomes for our largest, most complex client engagements, bridging the gap between bleeding-edge AI or data concepts and reliable, shippable production-ready infrastructure.
10
15+ years
Industry Leadership & Ecosystem Evolution
You shape our company-wide tech stack, our core engineering standards, and the long-term technical trajectory of RTS Labs. Your impact is felt across the entire organization, helping position our consultancy as an industry leader in engineering craft and execution.
Matching levels
How We Determine Your Level During Interviews
We do not match your level to the arbitrary title on your past resume; we match it to your actual execution and capabilities during our interview process.
As you move through our technical assessments and conversations, we will map your skills directly to this 1–10 framework. We are completely transparent throughout the process: if we find your skills track a level above or below the role you initially applied for, we will tell you early on so we can align expectations from day one.
